News Brief

New York, NY, May 10, 2007

Dr. Tom C. Garven, Executive Director and founder of Medicine for Africa, met with the CEO and other high level representatives of the African Renaissance Ambassador Corporation (ARA), in order to discuss ways on how to coordinate each other’s efforts in supporting the African continent in the area of health care as well as other sectors.

African Renaissance Ambassador is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, that has been established by Africans in Diaspora and goodwill westerners as a platform for facilitating a globally beneficial Art, Socio-economic and Scientific Renaissance in Africa. ARA's mission is to Help Africans Help Africa (HAHA), which is also a major objective of Medicine for Africa.

ARA’s CEO, Mr. Chris Muflam, advised the MfA team about procedural and structural matters which need to be taken into consideration in working with African governments and their representatives. ARA is heavily involved in the Cameroon, a country in which Medicine for Africa has recently started to develop a number of contacts and developmental projects via various different pathways.

ARA agreed to provide a list of willing Africans in Diaspora in the medical field to work with Dr. Garven. The plan is to also pursue sensitization in partnership with SARFM radio New York on the merits of the project, while seeking for sponsors. Furthermore, ARA and MfA are planning to co-operatively develop selective telemedicine projects, to be started in Cameroon in the near future, followed by projects in other African countries.

According to an old saying – 'health is wealth' – and it is such initiatives that are crucial for Africa's sustainable development and ultimately an African renaissance.
